Heartworm (Dirofilaria immitis)

Heartworm affects both dogs and cats, although the highest infection rates occur in dogs (Heartworm Society).  This parasite can affect dogs and cats regardless of what state you call home.  It was once thought to be a problem only in warm climates (southern states) but now heartworm is found globally.  Higher infection rates are found in those areas where the mosquito population is high.

Heartworm is passed to pets through a single bite by an infected mosquito. 

At Maple Tree Veterinary Clinic, we offer a full range of heartworm prevention.  Heartworm prevention is easy to administer and only needs be given to your pet monthly.  Before starting your pet on heartworm prevention, it is necessary to do a simple blood test to determine if your pet has already contracted the parasite. Maple Tree Veterinary Hospital has the ability to test both dogs and cats.  We are required to do an annual blood test for your pet's safety even if heartworm prevention has been given monthly without interruption.
